Alton Towers is a resort located in Alton, Staffordshire, in the heart of the English countryside, on a magnificent site that originally housed a country manor house and fortified mansion opened in 1860. It was opened to the public in the 1900s to raise funds to maintain the estate. It was transformed into a theme park in 1980 and continues to develop today despite the serious accident on The Smiler roller coaster in 2015. It is owned by the Merlin Entertainment group. Many legends surround this place, including the Chained Oak, whose frightening story is told in an attraction.

The Resort consists of an amusement park with beautiful roller coasters and dark rides with stories using local legends. There is a monorail with two stations that connects the parking lot and hotels to the amusement park.

Alton Towers Theme Park

The amusement park is made up of 11 themed zones.

Towers Street

This is the entrance to the park with various shops and a superb view of the ruins in the distance.

Katanga Canyon

This is the African area of the park with a raft ride, a family mine train, and an All-You-Can-Eat restaurant.

Gloomy Wood

This is the area that contains the excellent interactive dark ride Duel! as well as a path with animated tombs.

Forbidden Valley

This is the post-apocalyptic area that contains the excellent Nemesis, the world's first Inverted Coaster by B&M, Galactica, the world's first flying coaster by B&M, and the Rollercoaster Restaurant like at Europa Park.

Adventureland

This is the area that contains the Spinning coaster Spinball Whizzer.

X-Sector

This part of the park contains the roller coaster with the highest number of inversions in the world, The Smiler with its 14 inversions, but also the very short Oblivion with its first and only 87.5° drop. There is also a Huss Enterprise and a restaurant.

Mutiny Bay

This is the pirate area of the park with a Splash Battle, a Sealife aquarium, and especially the park's newest roller coaster, Wicker Man, with its winding wooden course that was under construction during our visit.

The World Of David Walliams

In 2020, Alton Towers will receive attractions themed according to the books of David Walliams in the former Cloud Cuckoo Land area. They are scheduled to open this spring.

Dark Forest

This supernatural and gloomy forest contains two roller coasters, including the world's first equipped with a vertical drop, Th13teen, and Rita, a launched roller coaster with a standard layout, a clone of which is located at Heide Park in Germany.

Cbeebies Land

Based on the program of the BBC TV channel reserved for the youngest, this is the area that contains the largest number of attractions and activities adapted to the little ones. You will find a roller coaster, a boat ride, small freefall towers, carousels, a meeting with the characters of the channel and a show with the Teletubbies.

The Towers

This is the area that gave the park its name, where the ruined property is located. Work is still underway to restore this heritage. The towers are used as a labyrinth during the Halloween season. This place also houses a superb attraction, Hex, a Madhouse that is for us the best in Europe with its gloomy atmosphere and its terrifying preshow (but we didn't tell you anything!).

The Gardens

Its strong point is its natural setting. Its landscaped English gardens are magnificent and you can easily escape the crowds by strolling through its alleys. To move from one area to another, there is a cable car line that flies over the gardens, it's magnificent!
